The internet is central to commerce, industry,
education, recreation and information services.
Companies who espouse the Internet in a properly
structured fashion can find their business transform;
adopting the technology inappropriately can spell
disaster.
Yet the extreme shortage of Internet technologists
threatens to stifle its growth and improvement. Or
worse, see it abused and destroyed by ill-conceived
solutions. Well-educated, well-trained individuals who
understand the network and the systems it supports and
who can influence its and their evolution, command
respect (and demand impressive salaries). This program
offers student two related programs: BSc Internet Systems for those
students who want to contribute to the Internet
revolution at the conceptual level while avoiding the
engineering details; and BEng Internet Engineering for
those of the students who also want to understand the
Internet at the physical and mathematical level and
engineer its future.
INTERNET
SYSTEMS
The Internet Systems program considers the Internet
and the end-systems in all their various forms. It is
not just web-page design, but the whole system:
clients, servers and end-user systems. Its domain it
that of data: data acquisition whether through
keyboard or sensor, data organization and manipulation
across a highly distributed environment, the medium
through which data passes, and data presentation or
its use to operate remote equipment. It encompasses
software and hardware design, the communications
infrastructure, the protocols and procedures required,
and the key network management skills. The program has
been designed to stretch student's intellectual
capabilities, but avoids mathematical analysis.
Teaching methods include tutorials and lab work,
Internet-based exercises and case studies. Assessment
is by examination, classroom and laboratory exercises,
Internet-based practical assessments and oral
presentations.

INTERNET
ENGINEERING
The Internet Engineering program focuses on the
engineering of the Internet. It encompasses the key
elements of Internet Systems and extends to the study
of analytical aspects of the medium, the
communications channels, and the end systems, whether
they be remote electronic systems or human users, at a
terminal or mobile. It dips into the curriculum of
Electronic Engineering, Computing Science and
Communications Engineering, to provide the skills
required by the professional engineer to manage the
design and operation of the network and to influence
its continuing development.
